How They Work

A retractable awning has an aluminum frame with folding arms. The fabric wraps around a roller tube mounted to the wall. When you extend the awning, the arms push out and the fabric unfurls. Retract it and the fabric rolls back up flush against the wall.

Manual awnings use a hand crank. Motorized awnings use a remote, wall switch, or phone app. Most new installs go motorized — the cost bump is small and the daily convenience is huge.

Motorization Add-Ons

Motorized awnings come with a wall switch by default. Most customers add one or more upgrades:

• Remote controls (one per owner, keychain-sized)
• Wind sensor that auto-retracts in gusts over 25 mph
• Sun sensor that extends when direct sun hits the patio
• Phone app integration with Somfy or Alexa

Wind sensors are the most important upgrade. A sudden afternoon thunderstorm can shred a deployed awning if it catches a gust. The sensor retracts it before damage happens.

Installation and Lead Time

Most retractable awning installs take one day. We remove any old awning, mount the new frame to the wall or fascia, install the motor and electrical run, and test every function before we leave.

Lead time from order to install is typically 4 to 6 weeks. Custom colors or oversized units can run 8 weeks. You'll get a firm install date when we place the order.
